Jack O’Callahan
Olympic Gold Medalist | Defenseman, 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Team
Born on July 24, 1957 in Charlestown, MA, Jack grew up with a love for hockey. He graduated from Boston Latin School in 1975, going on to Boston University to play hockey from 1975-79. While there, Jack was a team captain from 1977-79, was named All-East twice, All-New England and All-America, team MVP twice, Beanpot MVP, NCAA tournament MVP, and Cochrane award winner twice.
In 1977, Jack was selected as the 96th overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. He officially joined the team in 1982 after playing for the New Brunswick Hawks in the minor leagues, playing with them until 1987. Jack went on to play with the New Jersey Devils from 1987 until 1989, when he eventually retired.
Jack’s biggest impact in his playing career was in his role on the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team at the Olympic Winter Games, in which the underdog USA team defeated the Soviet powerhouse team to win the gold medal. In that game, Jack is known for his massive hit on a Soviet player, which forced a turnover and led to a game tying goal for the USA.
After retirement, Jack returned to Chicago and went into the financial services business on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Later, he co-founded Beanpot Financial Services with former NHL player Jack Hughes. Eventually, O'Callahan went on to work on behalf of the Blackhawk Alumni Association, the team with which he spent the bulk of his NHL days.
Currently, Jack lives in Florida and is the Senior Managing Director for Ziegler Capital Management, LLC.
