Johnny Damon Boston Red Sox Headshot

Boston Red Sox

In only his third season with the Red Sox, center fielder Johnny Damon has made quite a name for himself with the diehard Boston fans.  Damon gained some notoriety for the prominent beard and long, uncut hairstyle he brought with him to spring training in the 2004 season, contrasting with his previously clean-cut appearance.

In 1995, Damon began his Major League Career with the Kansas City Royals.  After setting his fair share of records in 2000, Damon joined the Oakland A’s for a single season.  As a free agent at the end of 2001, he signed with the Sox on December 21st and made 2002 his debut season in Boston.  Johnny has proven to be a strong player, time and time again, with 595 career RBIs and 114 homeruns.  With 929 career runs, Damon’s batting average of .286 has risen to .304 in the 2004 season.

Johnny was born in Fort Riley, Kansas on November 5, 1973.   He grew up in Orlando, Florida where he was named to the USA Today's High School All-America team and also named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.

Damon served as honorary co-chairman of the Medical Center of Independence Benefit Golf Classic from 1996 through 2000.  Consistent with his efforts as co-chairman, Damon also serves as a spokesperson for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  In addition, he has been nominated for national honors such as the Roberto Clemente Man of the Year award, for outstanding service to his team and community; and the Branch Rickey Award, which is given to the MLB player who best personifies "service above self.”
